I can’t help being the way I am. Shit, I guess I’m just a product of my environment. In my hood, it ain’t nothing nice. You got niggaz throwing sets, niggaz slinging stones, and niggaz clapping guns. And I ain’t even talkin’ ‘bout the grown folks. In my hood, niggaz get murdered and die on a regular basis—sometimes over something as petty as who gets to hustle on what corner. I guess it’s like a territorial thang. You know how dogs and other animals mark their territory by pissing on it? Same principal. We piss in the very spots where we lay our heads, but does that make us animals? You be the judge. The way it’s set up, we’re left to police and govern ourselves, but as soon as we do something to affect the world outside of our lil’ hoods, Johnny Law be all in our assess. Where was they when Mel caught it in the back? Where was they when Mizo took them shells going to the store to get a Dutch? Where was they when them clown ass niggaz tried to blow my head off for a fucking chain? A lot of times we do the things we do because that’s what’s programmed in us— passed down from parent, to child, to child and so on. This kinda shit goes on day in and day out in my hood. What I just ran down to you sounds familiar, don’t it? It should, ‘cause I’ll bet if you look out your window, the same shit is going on. From my hood to yo’ hood, it’s the same shit. So why don’t we act like it and try to do something about it?
